Not a Pleasure!

A taxpayer operating on a pleasure beach was selected for investigation under self-assessment. The investigation lasted for nearly 18 months during which the Inspector carried out a business economics exercise involving every single item sold in the shop.

The exercise when presented to the taxpayer was an inch thick and had obviously taken the Inspector many hours to prepare. Such was his determination to achieve a settlement the Inspector refused point blank to accept any explanations as to why the exercise was incorrect.

It was only with the help of the policy that the taxpayer was able to afford to fight the Inspector's claims and eventually the investigation was settled with only minor adjustments.

The accountants fees paid were almost £3,000.
