In At The Deep End
A company involved in manufacturing pumps for swimming
pools received a visit from a PAYE compliance officer. The officer
was dissatisfied with the case accounting systems operated by the
company, and notified the Inspector of Taxes who commenced and in-depth
investigation into the company accounts.
The compliance officer carried out a thorough review
of the PAYE affairs of the company, ensuring the wages and benefits
had been dealt with correctly. After 16 months of negotiation, it
was finally agreed that the PAYE affairs were in order.
The investigation into the company accounts followed
a similar pattern. The Inspector requiring several meetings with
the clients, and a tour of the business premises. He produced several
business economic models to support his accusations, and went into
the private affairs of the directors in detail, before finally accepting
the accounts as submitted.
The fee protection policy was presented with
fees of over £7,000 for the work.
